Biography
Ethan Pickett is a Midwest & Indiana native, from the city of Evansville, first picking up a camera at the age of 12. After play with videography and graphic art at Indiana University Southeast, a focused photography portfolio soon followed. Ethan’s professional span has stretched across the entire country from Louisville, KY to Richmond, VA, back to Fort Collins, CO where currently resides with his wife. Being raised by two physicists, he has a strong analytical mind with a passion for all things ‘right-brained’. A curiosity in 2018 grew to a hobby, to what is a now, not only a full blown obsession, but a thriving artist's community and platform to grow and empower each other as artists of all forms. Ethan’s love for videography never waned; glimpses and notes of a cinematic eye show through in a variety of his works. With a deep appreciation for music, he still produces the occasion music video, as well. During the day, if not working on the next project, you might find him fiddling with his instruments, or playing the back nine with friends. Don’t be shy, chances are, he has a camera on him.
Artist Statement
No matter what I do, from graphics, to video, to my niche in photography, I only ever aim to show my audience what I saw in my head. I’m enamored by the surreal but pleasing; I think it’s a weird-sort-of-beautiful. Hours of work in the studio is my way of saying, “I’m moved by this, & I want you to be moved, too.” As I began playing with angles and powers of light in my dark studio, I quickly realized how scientific the craft can be. My analytic mind loves it and sometimes when I’m really in my zone, I feel like a mad scientist. I think we all do when we’re really in our stride. My first run-in with the 'surreal' that sparked my flames near gasoline, -I was toying with the idea that you can imitate the ground in any dark setting, with just a mirror. One shot and I was addicted as my mind began to run wild with any idea that would illude the eye. Not a year later, I was manic with creativity and drowning in useless props, all but consumed by a fractal of ideas. It was blissful chaos. These weird directions my photography has taken me in, showed me two extremes of the art that I have a tearful love for equally. My analytical side won’t let the slightest discrepancy pass by, and I don’t stop before perfection. But my art's origin keeps me grounded in that I truly enjoy the in-depth, thoughtful and artistic freedom more than the purposeful actions. I'm not a photographer, I'm an artist that just happens to use a camera.
